Some strong news comes from eBay, which is starting to restrict smaller international sellers from selling tickets above $2,500 on eBay.com and targeting the US buyers. After the policy change, selling jewelry above the limit is allowed only for international sellers with a dedicated account manager assigned. The reason for the change, as per eBay, is “to ensure a good shopping experience for U.S. buyers and maintain high-quality shipping performance.”
The list of restricted countries includes India and Israel, which have historically been very active selling jewelry on eBay, especially in the diamond jewelry category. Out of all marketplaces in the US market, eBay has a very good positioning in the jewelry category, also far beyond the $2,500 limit. This applies to both jewelry and loose diamonds.
The intention of focusing on proven jewelry sellers is clear, and we always suggest that our marketplace partners put more effort into professional sellers. With that, it is a big question about how this change will impact the jewelry category on eBay in the long run. Businesses starting to sell jewelry online and making decisions about the sales channels will be challenged to start selling on eBay. They might prefer other sales channels, which will naturally weaken the channel’s competition and, thus, the positioning.
We trust our partners in eBay Luxury and hope that the emphasis on quality will work well for them!
What should jewelers do?
- If you sell jewelry on eBay priced $2,500 and above, ensure your account has a dedicated manager in the eBay Luxury team.
- If you don’t have a dedicated account manager, contact us. If relevant, we’ll be glad to make the introduction to our colleagues in the eBay Luxury team.
The winners?
- US sellers of fine jewelry. Naturally, lower competition from more “hungry” small businesses is an opportunity.
- Established sellers, with proven record of success, and established
Quick conclusion and reminder:
When selling jewelry on marketplaces, always remember:
- Always stay updated. Selling jewelry online is a long-term game, and things can change in one moment.
- Don’t put all eggs in one basket. Establish a healthy multichannel strategy
- Invest in your relations with the marketplaces. Establish personal connections with real people via webinars, calls, seller conferences, and trade shows.
